Kapwa and Colonialism: New Discussions on Filipino American Cultural Identity and Mental Health
Kapwa and Colonialism:
New Discussions on Filipino American Cultural Identity and Mental Health
In this talk, Edwin Carlos, PhD will discuss his research on Filipinx American identity and mental health. He will discuss current understandings of Filipinx American identity and mental health as it relates to colonial mentality. Then, he will share his findings from his dissertation research that expand on the relationship between colonial mentality and mental health.
Finally, he will provide space to discuss the application of these results to therapeutic practice, ethnic studies education, and community engaged work.
Key Takeaways
Current understandings of Filipinx American research take a deficit-oriented view of Filipino American mental health.
Drawing on theories and research from the deep Black American racial identity field, Edwin will discuss new ways to understand the relationship between colonial mentality and mental health among Filipinx Americans.

We commit to create space & continue healing work together, while moving towards collective (un)learning & grounding ourselves in love & feminist liberated ways of being.
