About the Artist
Founded in the mid-90s Bay Area, Kapuwa is the rebrand of Malaya Designs by Ray Haguisan, an artisan specializing in pyrography — the art of hand-burning designs into wood and other materials. His handmade wearable art is inspired by Philippine Script and Philippine Tattoo traditions, merging ancestral aesthetics with contemporary expression.
Through his craft, Ray aspires to serve the Filipino American community by protecting, sustaining, and reviving indigenous arts that have fallen into disuse or extinction. Each piece carries both artistry and memory — a wearable connection to heritage.
