Raising Ancestors’ Conscious Caregiving Workshop Series presents

Mamahood in the Hustle

Our panelists are Rocky Rivera, Valerie Francisco-Menchavez and Melissa de Mata; moderated by Adrienne Hidalgo Esguerra.

In this candid conversation, these powerhouse mamas will share their stories around how their seen and unseen work in motherhood and more public facing work is ushering in a new world for our next generation.

About our panelists:

Rocky Rivera is a journalist, author, and emcee from San Francisco whose work bridges hip-hop, food, culture, and community. She’s written for Rolling Stone and The Source, released acclaimed music, and now pens KQED’s Frisco Foodies column while hosting the podcast Xennial Dilemmas.

Valerie Francisco-Menchavez is an award-winning scholar-activist, researcher, writer and educator whose academic and political work calls attention to the experiences of Filipina migrants in care work industries and their indelible abilities to form solidarities and organize with one another. Her second book project, Caring for Caregivers: Filipina Migrant Workers and Community Building during Crisis, explores how Filipino care workers routinely endure arduous labor conditions, exhaustion, anxiety and abuse, more importantly, how the COVID-19 pandemic pushed them further to the frontlines of care and risk. Dr. Francisco is Professor in the Department of Sociology and Sexuality Studies at San Francisco State University.

Melissa is a photographer and brand storyteller, weaving creativity into business spaces. As a mother of two, she’s embracing her Filipina roots and channeling them into meaningful work that uplifts her community.

Your moderator, Adrienne Hidalgo Esguerra, is the founder of Raising Ancestors, an education and community building platform for parents, caregivers and educators to decolonize their practices. This is the 6th season Raising Ancestors is collaborating with Kapwa Kultural Center to bring intergenerational programming to the community.
