Fostering Healing and Connection: A Look into Brokada Healing Collective and Filipinx Men's Mental Health
On July 22nd, Kapwa Kultural Center (KKC) had the privilege of hosting the Brokada Healing Collective, in partnership with the Amado Khaya Initiative. Led by Edwin Carlos, this intentional in-person circle at our Kapwa space centered on a vital yet often overlooked topic: Filipinx men, mental health, and community care.
This gathering marked Brokada Healing Collective's inaugural in-person kwentuhan (dialogue) and healing circle session. Participants openly discussed deeply personal themes such as isolation, protection, and the profound responsibility of showing up for the most vulnerable within our communities, especially during challenging times.
Brokada Healing Collective: A Mission of Care
Brokada Healing Collective is more than just a group; it's a dedicated initiative committed to creating much-needed spaces for healing and dialogue. Their mission deeply aligns with KKC's own commitment to destigmatizing mental health within the Filipino American community, with a particular focus on Filipinx men, masculine-identifying individuals, and gender non-conforming folks.
Addressing a Critical Gap: Why These Spaces Matter
For too long, conversations around mental health have been constrained by cultural norms and societal expectations, particularly for Filipinx men. Traditional notions of strength and stoicism can often lead to suppressing emotions and neglecting mental well-being. This creates a significant void, as spaces where Filipinx men can openly discuss their struggles, find solidarity, and engage in healing practices are remarkably scarce.
Brokada Healing Collective directly addresses this gap by offering a unique platform where participants can:
Explore Identity: Delve into what it means to be a Filipinx man in today's world, navigating cultural expectations and personal experiences.
Embrace Healing: Engage in meaningful dialogue and practices that foster emotional well-being and personal growth.
Challenge Toxic Norms: Actively work towards shifting away from harmful masculine stereotypes and embracing more compassionate, care-centered ways of relating to themselves and others.
Build Community: Forge genuine connections and create a supportive network where individuals feel seen, heard, and understood.
Topics covered in Brokada's sessions often include navigating intergenerational trauma, cultural identity, emotional vulnerability, healthy relationships, and breaking cycles of silence around mental health.
The Power of Collective Care
The partnership between Brokada Healing Collective, the Amado Khaya Initiative, and KKC underscores the power of collective care. By providing a safe and brave space, we empower individuals to embark on their healing journeys, knowing they are supported by a community that understands their unique experiences.
While the July 22nd event was a significant milestone, Brokada Healing Collective continues its vital work. Their ongoing efforts are crucial in fostering a healthier, more emotionally resilient Filipinx community.
These circles are open to anyone interested in being part of a meaningful dialogue around identity, healing, and fostering a culture of care, regardless of their ethnic, racial, or gender identities.
