Our Approach

Rooted in the values of Kapwa and Ginhawa, KKC serves both the Filipino/a/x community and the wider public. Located in Daly City, which has a large Filipino/a/x population, KKC is a historic social enterprise that offers unique health and wellness services for better mental health and wellbeing.

KKC aims to create a welcoming space that supports cultural identity and community connections. It provides educational programs that celebrate cultural traditions and practices through art, poetry, dance, and more, helping youth and the community achieve wellness.

  • The vision of this venture lies on the shoulders of those who came before us … We were inspired by our ancestors of generations past … to continue the healing of our structurally undervalued communities.

Stephanie Garma Balon, Co-Founder of Kapwa Kultural Center

Our Story

Kapwa Kultural Center grew out of the Filipino Mental Health Initiative (FMHI) San Mateo County, whose mission is to improve the well-being of Filipinos through culturally relevant resources, services, and strong community collaboration.

Led by Pinay mental health clinicians Stephanie Balon, LMFT (Co-Chair since 2011) and Christi Morales-Kumasawa, AMFT (volunteer since 2012, Co-Chair since 2017), FMHI SMC proposed an innovative mental health project in 2018. Their social enterprise model was approved under the Mental Health Services Act Innovation, receiving $2.5 million in state funding for a five-year launch.

KKC operates as a department of Daly City Partnership, a nonprofit providing essential safety-net services including food, clothing, housing assistance, diapers, and school supplies.
